Location: Overthrow Boxing Club, NYC
Dress: Sandro Paris ‘Flava’ Lace Dress (similar here, here, and here) | Belt: Zara ( similar here and here) | Shoes: Stuart Weitzman ‘MorePearls’ Sandal on sale here | Fur Stole: Similar here and here
I’ve had a stressful past few months, packed with several multi-day shoots and a lot of scripting, so I thought it was a good time to take break from writing and my typical text heavy posts and do something fun and out of the norm. Since Stephen always offers a much needed comedic break, I roped him into today’s post with a little head-to-head style questionnaire, basically, we’re answering style questions about each other, so let’s get ready to rumble….you know because I’m at a boxing gym.
Describe the outfit in today’s post:
Stephen: A little bit country, a little bit rock n’ roll….feel like I stole this from something. A black, or dark navy, dress with red and blue stars and a country looking belt. A pair of Stuart Weitzman heels with pearl embellishments. Solid.
Annamaria: I’m wearing the Sandro ‘Flava’ dress which has a great sweetheart shell underneath an illusion guipure star lace; worn with a red fur stole. I paired it with the Stuart Weitzman ‘Morepearls’ heeled sandal in a rich navy suede, which actually just went on sale and the navy is a deep enough shade that it mixes well with black and allows them to go more formal. I added a black and gold belt from Zara and mixed in some Chanel pins and gold pointed studs in the belt holes.
What was your spouse wearing on your first date?
Stephen: This is not a fair question, my wife has an insane memory, me not so much. I would say Rock & Republic jeans and a top. Very specific I know.
Annamaria: I feel like I should preface this by saying we met over 11 years ago, our first date was in 2006…not a great year for fashion. Let’s keep that in mind before we judge how heinous these outfits sound. He was probably wearing True Religion jeans, some “rare” pair of Air Force 1 high-tops, a cashmere blazer, and either a clash t-shirt or something Burberry. What did you think about the other’s style when you were first dating?
Stephen: She had great style, besides her striking good looks it was the first thing I noticed. We lived in Portland, Oregon at the time so most people dressed like they were ready for a hike. I liked that she had a very unique style and was always “dressed up.”
Annamaria: 90% of his outfits looked like someone let the air out of them, i.e. four sizes too big. He had pretty good style, a little matchy matchy for my taste, definitely a risk taker and a brand whore, but overall there wasn’t that much work to be done. I don’t think I ever saw him in the same pair of shoes and I remember every pair had some stupid story about why they were special, if I had a dollar for every time I heard “colorways” #sneakerhead. We did frequently have the same jeans on (guy and girl version) not intentionally, which was embarrassing. I also remember thinking “this guy must own the entire Burberry and Façonnable line of shirts”, he was quite ostentatious in his youth, but funny, so I let it slide. He also didn’t get the concept of vintage, he would always call it “used.”
What’s the worst outfit your spouse has ever worn?
Stephen: Honestly, I can’t think of a bad one.
Annamaria: So many options, but I’ll never forget the time he called me to tell me he put together a “sick” outfit, he shows up wearing purple AF1 high-tops, purple plaid shorts, and a purple graphic tee underneath a lilac button-up….he looked like Hip-Hop Barney. I wasn’t kidding when I said he was matchy matchy. Give your future daughter a piece of fashion or beauty advice:
Stephen: Layers, lots of layers.
Annamaria: Don’t do anything permanent, tastes change drastically as you get older, remember those pictures of your father in college I showed you. When I was a kid I wanted a perm and a butterfly tattoo on my arm, I’ll just let that visual slowly sink in.
Describe your spouse’s style using the name of a TV show or movie:
Stephen: The Bold and The Beautiful
Annamaria: Back in the day: Ali G Indahouse or Stranger things | Present Day: Suits
How many outfits does your spouse try on before going out?
Annamaria: One, he hates trying on clothes. In fact, he’ll just pull the sleeve and a pant leg out of the closet and ask if they go together, because actually taking it out of the closet and holding them up is apparently too much work. What is your favorite and least favorite item of clothing your spouse owns?
Stephen: My favorite items would be her “cape” and the green “military” dress. Least favorite would have to be high-waisted shorts and pants, although this is not specific to her, I just don’t like them in general.
Annamaria: Favorite: He looks really good in suits and formal wear, my favorite item he owns is a shawl collar navy dinner jacket, it’s a toss-up between that and his sparkly Jimmy Choo shoes, he’s such a classic beauty. Least Favorite: He doesn’t wear it anymore but he owns and refuses to part with an XL white suede LRG jacket…who did I marry?
Name a type of clothing you wish your spouse would wear but they refuse?
Stephen: I think she looks cute in sneakers, I always try to get her to buy them. I get an interesting look whenever I pick out a pair of those heeled Nike sneakers. I also think she looks good in “comfy” clothes.
Annamaria: I think vests can be cute, particularly sweater vests, but he doesn’t like them. I also like plaid and velvet dinner jackets, he’s not a fan. Experimenting with color is a tricky one too, his stock answer is: “I can’t pull that off with red hair”…..true, jk. What is your spouse’s biggest fashion pet-peeve?
Stephen: There are two. Hoop earrings and acrylic French manicures
Annamaria: Undershirts under dress shirts
Based on style alone, if your spouse was a TV show or movie character which one does their style most resemble?
Stephen: Cher from Clueless or Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl
Annamaria: Formerly: Eddie Huang from Fresh off the Boat | Currently: Daniel Grayson from Revenge Your apartment is burning down, your spouse can only save three items (clothing and accessories), what are they?
Stephen: Wedding and anniversary rings, although that’s five things. If those count as one then I’d add her wedding dress, wedding shoes, and Chanel necklaces/belts…that’s 6, she’s not making it out.
Annamaria: DY necklace, wedding ring, Roc-A-Fella Forces
Describe your spouse’s shopping style:
Stephen: Try everything on, take pictures, put it on hold, think about it for a day or two, go back, ask me four times if I like it, ignore my answer, and then decide if she wants it or not.
Annamaria: Walks in, is into it for all of 5 minutes then looks at me to pick everything out, judges everything I pick, refuses to try anything on, touches the fabric (I’m not sure what’s going on with this step), and if they don’t have his size readily available he’s over it.
How do you choose gifts for each other?
Stephen: We decided a long time ago that it makes more sense for us to just ask each other what we want instead of spending money on something the other might not like.
Annamaria: We don’t play this game anymore, we’re both way too picky. Occasionally, there is something specific I know he wants and I’ll surprise him with it, or if it’s something like cufflinks, where fit doesn’t matter, I’ll pick those without his input. If it’s an electronic, clothes, or shoes he has to be involved. He’s weird about fabrics and the toe of shoes and I can’t pin-point the exact criteria he’s using. If your spouse had a blog what would they call it?
Stephen: Easy, The Shopping Patch, runner-up was “The B Word”
Annamaria: I came with options:
1) Oh you like this? my wife picked it out.blogspot.com
2) How to style a blue button-up with just about anything.com.
3) I refuse to try on anything before I buy it.wordpress.com
4) The answer is yes, I’m wearing head to toe Nike, and no I’m not sponsored.net
What was the first and last gift you bought each other?
Stephen: First would be a ring with a purple stone and last was a Moschino belt.
Annamaria: First was a David Yurman chain and dog tag, last would be a Cartier belt.
If your spouse could only wear one color for the rest of their life what would it be?
Stephen: I know everyone would think pink but it’s actually black. She doesn’t actually wear pink all that much.
Annamaria: Blue or green?
Stephen: Dries Van Noten glitter boots, pictures have been taken and they are on hold.
Annamaria: Gucci loafers, a DJI Phantom drone, and a PS4/Call of Duty WWII, he’s a multifaceted individual.
What is your spouse’s biggest shopping addiction, something they continuously buy?
Stephen: Right now necklaces/belts. She uses them for both.
Annamaria: Nike jackets and sweaters.
(This one is about yourself) What’s a fashion moment/outfit you regret?
Stephen: I don’t regret anything I’ve worn, I stand by my fashion choices. My wife is forcing me to pick something so if I had to pick it would be an orange linen Tommy Bahama shirt with a money sign pattern, worn with linen pants. I also often question my formerly spiked hair.
Annamaria: This isn’t an outfit it’s a year: Empire-waist tops, flared “designer” jeans (they always HAD to be 7 For All Mankind, Rock & Republic, or True Religion because it was expensive to look this bad), and platform flip-flops (pretty sure I also used a waver on my hair) so much yuck in one look. I remember one of my friends saying at the time, “do you think we’ll look back at ourselves someday and wonder why it was trendy to dress like we’re pregnant?” The answer is, yes, we’ll look back with shame and regret, and spend an exorbitant amount of time untagging all photo proof of this time period. Also, when I first started wearing makeup I wore eyeliner without mascara….but why?
